His mother and grandmother reared him, working tirelessly to inculcate in him the values of perseverance and hard work. Sean was a student at the art-focused Detroit Waldorf School from Kindergarten through the eighth grade. He also participated in a weekly rhyming contest on t.7FM, a local Detroit radio station. After a 2005 radio interview, he got to know Kanye West there and had the opportunity to show off his skills by freestyling for the rapper, sending him many recordings for feedback, and providing a copy of his music. Following multiple meetings and months of song submissions, Sean eventually received a call from Kanye West personally expressing his desire to sign him.
