Born in Detroit, Michigan on March 25, 1988, Sean Michael Leonard Anderson, better known by his stage name Big Sean, is an American rapper who is signed to Island Def Jam and Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music labels. He first got to know West at a radio station in 2005, then in 2007 he signed Sean after being struck by his clear talent. His three mixtapes to date are Finally Famous (2007), UKnowBigSean (2009), and BIG (2010). June 2011 saw the release of his debut album, Finally Famous, which had guest performances by prominent hip-hop artists like as Lupe Fiasco, The-Dream, Chris Brown, Pharrell Williams, and Wiz Khalifa.

His mother and grandmother reared him, working tirelessly to inculcate in him the values of perseverance and hard work. From Kindergarten until the eighth grade, Sean attended the Detroit Waldorf School, an art school where he was exposed to a wide range of artistic and cultural expression. Later, he went to Cass Technical High School, where he developed his musical career, made friends for life, and won the respect of his peers and admirers while selling copies of his songs on his own. Sean developed a close bond with 102.7FM, a Detroit local radio station where he regularly performed rhymes. After a 2005 radio interview, he got to know Kanye West there and had the opportunity to show off his skills by freestyling for the rapper, sending him many recordings for feedback, and providing a copy of his music. Following multiple meetings and months of song submissions, Sean eventually received a call from Kanye West personally expressing his desire to sign him. What a hot artist he is.

Big Sean, a producer and rapper from Detroit, has amassed a multimillion dollar online following through his trilogy of Finally Famous mixtapes and his endless stream of independently made viral videos. With his official album release, Finally Famous: The Album, he finally steps up to the front. The album is scheduled for release in March on Def Jam/G.O.O.D. Music, the label run by his mentor Kanye West. The first song, which was produced by No ID and features Chris Brown, may be downloaded via Big Sean’s Facebook page. To see it, click this link. It’s lovely. Some AutoTune is present. It jolts. I suck.

Since making his BET Awards televised debut in October 2010—two months after being named a “New Joint” at 106 & Park—Big Sean’s career has taken off. His most recent G.O.O.D. Music mixtape was released in October as well. Don Cannon hosted that mixtape, Finally Famous Vol. 3: BIG. The music video “What U Doin (Bull****ting)” has over 955,000 views on the #1 music site VEVO. “Supa Dupa Lemonade” has over 1.3 million views on YouTube. “Too Fake” features Chiddy Bang and has over 770,000 views on YouTube. “Ambiguous” features Mike Posner. “Memories” was released two weeks ago on Complex.com. BIG has received over 650,000 downloads to date. In addition, Sean contributed to five tracks from Kanye West’s recording sessions for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy; four of these tracks were included in the G.O.O.D. Friday Campaign, while the fifth, “See Me Now,” is included as a bonus track on the album.

A quick biography of Big Sean: Sean Anderson, 22, began rapping at the pioneering Waldorf School in Detroit when he was twelve years old. He formed a duet with a classmate in high school, and they went on to win the “Friday Night Cipher” MC competition at Hot 102.7, a major hip-hop radio station. They were able to rap live on television every Friday night for almost a year after their victory. Back in the Late Registration days, Sean met Kanye West one Friday night around 2005, and the adolescent got permission to play his freestyle. It was the relationship of a lifetime that brought Sean together with G.O.O.D. Music in late 2007 and Def Jam in 2008.

“I remember in the eighth grade I told myself, man I’m going to be signed to Def Jam,” Sean recalls. “I believe it was meant for me because I always release it into the universe. I was supposed to be a musician and an inspiration to others. I feel like I deserve this because there have been a lot of evenings when I’ve had to work and have been depressed instead of going out. I was destined to achieve this.”

Yes, Sean, you deserve it, and dreams do come true.
