Jelly Roll has been a musician for a long time. He began his career in hip hop, moved into rock, and is now focusing on country music. He made an appearance on The Bobby Bones Show to discuss his ties to Nashville and country music, as well as to tell a portion of his tale.
Despite not being his legal name, Jelly Roll was his mother’s nickname when he was a little “chubby kid,” and it stayed. Jelly Roll is really thrilled about his song “Dead Man Walking,” which is currently number one on the rock charts. However, he has recently been concentrating on recording a full-length country album. He doesn’t usually stick to a single genre of music because he sees himself as a singer/songwriter. In recent months, he has collaborated on songs with Brantley Gilbert and Ernest; Ernest was also a co-writer on Jelly Roll’s current country single, “Son Of A Sinner.” In this song, Jelly Roll truly pays homage to his heritage. His dream has always been to become a country performer; he is from Antioch, Tennessee.
Every genre of music is played during a Jelly Roll performance, and a DJ adds that “old school” vibe. Jelly Roll has ten tour dates with Gilbert and thirty performances with Shinedown planned for this year. In response to a question on how he and Gilbert ended up dating, Jelly Roll said that they eventually made it happen because people were telling them both that they needed to meet. The Rock and he are friends as well. It turns out that The Rock heard one of Jelly Roll’s tracks and has strong ties to Nashville. He wanted to create a video for it, and the two have remained friends ever since. The first person to congratulate Jelly Roll on his Opry debut was The Rock.
Jelly Roll enjoys sharing his inspirational story with others in an effort to build relationships. He was raised in a middle-class, lower-class home as the youngest of four children. His mother battled drugs and mental illness, while his father worked as a meat salesman for his own family business, DeFord Wholesale Meats. Before having an epiphany while sitting in his detention cell, he spent roughly 12 years in and out of the criminal justice system. His cell door was knocked on by a guard informing him that he had a daughter. Jelly Roll came to the realization that he wanted to be a good parent to his daughter because of the nice father he had. Following his release from prison, Jelly Roll acknowledged that he was only capable of singing and talking. He thus concentrated on writing music. His mother served as inspiration for a portion of his musical career, as music had a profound impact on her during her difficult times. So he set out to create music that would affect people in the same way that songs affected his mother.
Currently, Jelly Roll and Bunnie are wed, and they share custody of Jelly Roll’s daughter in addition to having children together. He joked that he can’t surprise Bunnie with anything because they are the best of friends. Regarding parenting, Jelly Roll stated that he prioritizes open communication and honesty with his children. His kid is his “little homie, my road dog,” and he wants to support and nurture her development.
Fans will notice that Jelly Roll has numerous tattoos, especially on his face. While incarcerated, he had his first face tattoo of a cross and teardrop. Above his eyebrow, he has a tattoo with his son’s name, “Noah.” He also has a great taste for alcoholic beverages, particularly tequila. He likes to play golf because it allows him to drink whenever he wants without worrying about being judged. But he doesn’t like golf because of the attire; they make him feel ridiculous. He will never dress nicely outside of his Opry performances.
Later this year, Jelly Roll will perform in Nashville, with all earnings going toward the construction of a music center for the nearby juvenile prison facility. Furthermore, he intends to equal the earnings with his own funds. He truly cares about assisting young children in breaking out from the cycle of the legal system, and he never holds back.
