When Kevin Gates started recording music in 2007 alongside other local Louisianans like Webbie and Lil Boosie, he started rapping. With the help of Lil Boosie, Gates’ 2008 hit “Get in the Way” gained him initial recognition. He and Boosie would soon be behind bars on unrelated charges. After being freed in 2011, Gates started making music again right away. Lil’ Wayne would eventually take an interest in him. The Luca Brasi Story, a mixtape that Gates published at the beginning of 2013, was dubbed “easily the best rap-related thing” by Spin Magazine in February. Over 130,000 downloads of The Luca Brasi Story have been made from the well-known mixtape sharing website DatPiff.

It was revealed on February 15, 2013, that Kevin Gates has joined Atlantic Records. Gates also appeared on Gudda Gudda’s 2013 mixtape and Pusha T’s mixtape. Stranger Than Fiction, Gates’ street album, was accompanied by the single “4:30” and was released on July 16, 2013.

After releasing his most recent album, By Any Means, in 2014, his fame skyrocketed. On the cover of the 2014 XXL Freshman list was Mid-year.
