That Mexican OT – Johnny Dang

Before he could even create raps, that Mexican OT (Outta Texas) was mumbling them. He recalled his mother telling him, “Fuck that school—my son is going to be a rapper,” after he failed some of his elementary school subjects. His father would often wake him up in the middle of the night to confront (and humiliate) his drunken friends.

In light of this, OT’s decision to pursue a career in rap may seem obvious, but he needed one last push, an epiphany so strong that he was powerless to resist destiny. Like so many others, that epiphany changed his life while he was fleeing the law. His toes were covered in a layer of fresh cow dung, and he was drenched in pee.

“To stay warm that night, I urinated on myself about twelve times.” It felt frigid as hell. Reluctant to discuss the incident that preceded the police chase, OT says over the phone, “I was stepping in cow shit to keep my toes warm.” “I’m sprinting to Lake Jackson from Brazoria County, Texas. And you know what I’m doing, as I run? I’m doing some rapping. At that point, I understood there was no getting away from this rap garbage. I’m forced to carry it out.

Things have come a long way since that delicious and shivery night in the backcountry of Texas. Virgil Gazcon, 24, was born and currently resides in Brazoria, approximately one hour south of Houston, with his dog, Bushwick Bill, and girlfriend. (OT claims his father went out with the well-known Geto Boy.) He signed quietly to Good Talk/Manifest/Good Money Global last year and spends most of his days recording, playing video games, and hanging out with family. He recently added performing to the schedule. When we chat in mid-June, OT has just returned home from a run of completely booked Texas performances in towns like Austin and Corpus Christi.

He responds, “I’ve been performing my whole life,” when asked how he got ready for his debut performances. As my mother ironed money on the floor, I was rapping along to music videos while seated on the bed. When I was in seventh school, my dad would wake me up in front of a home full of girls and guys, telling me to beat these guys up in rap fights. I’ve been giving performances. Right now, all I get paid for is the work.”
