Rapper and songwriter Ermias Joseph “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom received a Grammy nomination. On August 15, 1985, Nipsey Hussle was born in Los Angeles, California, to African American Angelique Smith and Eritrean immigrant Dawit Asghedom. He also has a sister, Samantha Smith, and an elder brother, Samiel Asghedom. He became entangled in the world of gangs at an early age, joining the Crips, while growing up in the impoverished gang environment of South Central Los Angeles. Hussle went to Alexander Hamilton High School, but he left before he could receive his diploma after being charged with sneaking into a computer lab.

Hussle was taken into a juvenile jail institution after being detained for several minor offenses. He turned his attention to his music profession, determined to turn his life around. After comedian Julius “Nipsey” Russell, he took on the moniker “Nipsey Hussle.” He dropped his debut mixtape, A Slauson Boy, in 2005. Along with these mixtapes, he also released Bullets Ain’t Got No Name, Vol. 1 (2008), Vol. 2 (2008), and Vol. 3 (2008). The Marathon (2010), The Marathon Continues (2011), Crenshaw (2013), and Mailbox Money (2014) were some of his other mixtapes. Nipsey Hussle collaborated with hip-hop musicians like Drake, Y.G., Sean “Diddy” Combs, and Snoop Dogg during his rap career. Additionally, he had a brief acting career that included appearances in the movies Caged Animal (2010), Love Chronicles: Secrets Revealed (2010), and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony I Tried (2007).

Victory Lap, Nipsey Hussle’s sole studio album, was released in 2018. In February 2019, that album was nominated for a Grammy Award for best rap album. Nipsey Hussle was shot and died on March 31, 2019, in front of the Marathon Clothing business that he owned. The gunshot also injured Kerry Lathan’s nephew and two other males. After being taken to a hospital in Los Angeles, Hussle passed away from his gunshot wounds.

Eric Holder, 29, was taken into custody two days later for the man’s murder. Holder, a rapper and gang member himself, stated that he killed Nipsey Hussle because of a long-running argument he had with the rapper. The Blood and Crip gangs in Los Angeles, Compton, Watts, and Inglewood declared a ceasefire in remembrance of Nipsey Hussle after his passing. On April 11, 2019, his funeral was place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Steve Wonder, Louis Farrakhan, Snoop Dogg, and other celebrities attended his burial. Hussle passed away at the age of 33. The next day, he was laid to rest in the Hollywood Hills’ Forest Lawn.

Actress Lauren London was his significant other at the time of his passing. Kross Asghedom, the couple’s son, was born in 2016. Emani Asghedom, his daughter from a prior relationship, was also his child.
